MATCH OF THE MONTH

Big Brother Ford & Little Brother Andrew
Community Based Match Andrew and his big brother, Ford, have been matched since 8/20/2004. He was 7 years old at the time. Andrew was full of energy with a love for life and his disabled mom was struggling to raise him in a single parent household. His mother felt it was time for some positive male influence as Andrew had started to act out and test his mom and grandparents.

Because Andrew had such an active mind, he needed a big brother who was an intellectual conversationalist and could discuss ideas with Andrew. Ford was the perfect match. Over the years, Ford and Andy have participated in many activities. They have done everything from play catch in the yard to analyze investment reports. Andrew has learned to play chess and golf. Andrew hasn’t been the only one learning in this relationship; Ford has received basketball and computer tips from Andrew. Over the years, Andrew has maintained his honor student status and become a star basketball player. Ford and Andrew have enjoyed many intelligent conversations about the world, played many board games and eaten a variety of foods. Ford has always encouraged Andrew to plan for the future, to try his hardest at everything he does and to be honest and ethical. Andrew is now 14 years old and, as he enters high school, he has a good idea about what he would like to be when he grows up.
Andrew had decided he would like to become a teen mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters and share what he has learned from Ford with another child. Andrew is currently going through the enrollment process to become a Big Brother. Because he knows the value of a mentor, Andrew wants to give back what Ford has given him. Andrew is also an active member of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ sponsored club, Lake Havasu High School Bigs Club. He is one of the few male club members. He always has a great attitude and ideas for their upcoming events or fundraisers.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America is ranked in the top 1% of all charities in America in terms of fiscal responsibility and effective use of donations.

FACT: Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring reduces a child’s risk of dropping out of school. We have the numbers to prove it. Our Littles are:

  • 35% less likely to skip school
  • 33% less likely to be involved in school misconduct

However, the biggest change can’t be put into numbers-we help change the way a child sees the world and interacts with it.
Through one-on-one mentoring, children learn to make better choices. When a girl discovers that she can change her own life…when a boy can envision a bright future for himself…these kid’s lives are changed forever.
